Is Chiropractic covered by my private health insurance?
Yes, at Cleveland Chiropractic we can claim your health care rebate instantly with HICAPS. Your level of cover will dictate how much you receive as a rebate.
Cleveland Chiropractic is a preferred provider for both BUPA and Medibank.
What should I expect on my first visit?
We need to establish what is causing your pain and dysfunction. We will do this with a thorough history followed up by orthopaedic, neurological, and functional movement examinations to establish an accurate diagnosis.
Once we have an idea of what is causing your concern, we will discuss and explain these findings with you.
Our aim is to create a treatment plan to get you moving well and to achieve your health goals. Each treatment plan is tailored to the patient’s individual needs and will include not only your care at Cleveland chiropractic, but home rehabilitation exercises and lifestyle modifications needed to get you back on track.
If it is clinically necessary, we will treat you on this initial visit.
Is Chiropractic Safe?
Chiropractic is a safe form of treatment for musculoskeletal conditions and carries a low risk profile. All form of manual therapy will carry the risk of an adverse reaction and the most common associated with chiropractic care is mild achiness around the treated area reported 12-24 hours after a treatment.
Chiropractic is a natural intervention that doesn’t require any invasive medical procedures/ surgeries or drugs. Studies have also shown that when it came to treating neck or lower back pain a course of chiropractic care was found to be 250 times safer than a course of anti-inflammatory drugs (Dabbs & Lauretti 1995). When it comes to surgical intervention for spinal issues a review found that there was an overall complication rate of 16.4% per patient (Nasser at all 2010).
There has been discussion with the link of vertebrobasilar artery stroke and chiropractic care and the most up to date research we have states (Cassidy et al. Spine Vol. 33-45, 2008) vertebrobasilar artery stroke (VBA stroke) is a rare event in the population. The increased risks of VBA stroke associated with chiropractic and primary care physician (PCP), e.g. (GP) visits is likely due to patients with headache and neck pain from VBA dissection seeking care before their stroke. We found no evidence of excess risk of VBA stroke associated with chiropractic care compared to a PCP, such as a GP. Prior research places the risk of stroke like events at 1 in 2million to 1 in 5.85 million (Haldeman et al. Spine vol. 24-8 1999).

What is that cracking noise?
When a chiropractor performs an adjustment (a quick, short and precise impulse into a spinal segment) we can often hear a popping or cracking sound.
Each joint in the spine is surrounded by fluid called ‘synovial fluid’, which lubricates the joint and keeps it healthy. This fluid is filled with dissolved gasses, such as Oxygen, Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide. During an adjustment the spinal joints are slightly opened and due to a pressure change a gas bubble is produced and we can hear that popping sound, which is called a cavitation. Similar in principle to when you shake up a bottle of champagne and hear the popping sound when the cork is popped off.
Despite what you may think, the popping or cavitation you hear has nothing to do with the actual bones in your spine.
How many treatments will I need?
It is hard to say exactly how many treatments any patient will need as it varies greatly depending on the presenting condition, length of time the condition has been present for, the severity of the pain and age of the patient, among other things.
But as a rule of thumb in most acute cases we would expect to be making a 50-80% improvement on your symptoms within 4-6 sessions.
Many patients choose to continue care after they have become asymptomatic to help them better deal with the stresses that life puts on our body and try to prevent future reoccurrences of their issues. Much like brushing our teeth twice a day to prevent cavities and tooth decay, healthy habits are worth continuing for a lifetime.
Do you see pregnant women or children?
Chiropractic is safe for both pregnant women and children. ‘Safer Care Victoria’ did an independent review of the level of harm suffered by children under 12 when undergoing spinal manipulative therapy. This review showed very little evidence of any serious incidents occurring.
Our chiropractors are trained to modify their treatment types to accommodate for who is in front of them, which would be considerably different to a standard chiropractic treatment.
The most amount of pressure used when treating babies will be no more than you would use when putting pressure on an eyeball before it became uncomfortable.
What treatments do Chiropractors do?
Here at Cleveland Chiropractic our chiropractors are trained in a variety of techniques and skills. Usually, chiropractors will perform an adjustment or a manipulation, which is a quick but short push or pull into a joint which can sometimes make a popping noise.
We know that manipulation isn’t for everyone, so we also use a variety of low force techniques such as Drop piece, Activator, Blocking, Joint mobilization, soft tissue work and home Rehabilitation programs.
So, whatever your preference is we will be able to accommodate for you.
Do Chiropractors treat muscle strains?
Yes!
We often will see various muscle injuries in practice. Sports related injuries are on of the focus points of our clinic.
Bulk Billing
Chiropractic Services
At Cleveland Chiropractic we accept referrals from GPs for bulk billing Chiropractic services. Using a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) or Extended Primary Care (EPC) plan, a maximum of five visits per calendar year can be used for our services. These visits can also be used to see other health practitioners including Physiotherapists and Osteopaths and Podiatrists and your GP will consult with you to work out which will be most effective.
While the EPC visits can be used as a trial of care for chiropractic, many chronic conditions may take longer to resolve than the duration of these visits.
How can I get a referral to see a bulk billed Chiropractor?
Chronic Disease Management or Extended Primary Care plans are issued for chronic conditions that may be responsive to manual therapy. To get a referral for bulk billed Chiropractic care, you will need to make an appointment with your GP, who will initiate the management plan. This entitles you to 5 Medicare covered visits per year. Once you have your CDM or EPC plan, nominate Cleveland Chiropractic, the GP will send us your paperwork so that you can book an appointment and we can claim your visits through Medicare.
What is a Chronic Disease Management/Extended Primary Care plan?
A CDM or EPC plan is a Medicare program designed to encourage a multi-disciplinary approach to chronic conditions that are likely to have lasted six months or more. This is because chronic conditions are often complex and require a thorough diagnostic approach as well as ongoing care.
